You need a rod and reel, fly line (backing, line, leader, tippet), a small box of flies, and polarized sunglasses. Add waders and boots if you’ll be wading. A beginner outfit can be a great way to start because it pairs the rod, reel, and line, so you can focus on learning to cast and fish.

Think “day on the water,” not just gear. Along with your rod setup and flies, plan for:


  • Conditions: layers, rain shell, sun protection, water
  • Wading needs: waders/boots if required, plus a wading belt
  • Simple tools: nippers, forceps, and extra tippet
  • Carry system: a sling or pack that keeps the essentials easy to reach
  • Logistics: license, directions/river access, and a plan for safely getting in and out


If you’re going with a guide, ask what they provide so you don’t overpack.

A 9-foot 5-weight is our recommended starting point. It’s easy to learn on, handles a wide range of trout fishing, and still has enough backbone for bass and windy days.
