The Story

Pennsylvania's Allenberry Resort offers Orvis-endorsed lodging and guided fly-fishing trips and classes for the novice fly fisher who wants to break into the sport, but is also a premier location for those more experienced who prefer to break off on their own to find solitary calm in our nearby natural assets. The Yellow Breeches Creek, a nationally renowned fly-fishing stream, is—literally—in the back yard of our property and has contributed to a rich fly-fishing lodging history with regard to our resort.

Our Orvis-certified guides from Relentless Fly Fishing can accommodate any skill level and their focus on educating in every facet of fly fishing will ensure the aspiring angler always comes away with a deeper level of knowledge. Additionally, Allenberry's fly-fishing partners from TCO Outdoors will provide guests with the necessary equipment for an enjoyable fly-fishing outing while providing the basic knowledge of what they need to outfit themselves for individual fly-fishing pursuits. Routine classes at our resort provide even further introduction and education.

Allenberry also ensures you'll have transportation to and from any nearby airport, and a ride to any desired fly-fishing location, making your experience as stress-free as possible. Lastly, Allenberry's dedicated ambassador program guarantees you'll always have friendly, personal service when you lodge with us.

At Allenberry Resort, the setting will bring you in and the experience will bring you back. On top of our comprehensive fly-fishing packages, setting, and education, we also have an onsite café, restaurant, numerous seasonal events, playhouse, and an always-available litany of additional outdoor adventure activities to make your next stay with us memorable no matter how you choose to spend it.

Lodging:

Allenberry Resort offers 70+ sleeping rooms and lodging options including six quaint cottages, Creekside House, Still House, Meadow Lodge, Pine Lodge, Stone Lodge, Hillside Lodge, and the Mansion. The cottages, Creekside House, Still House, and Meadow Lodge are among the four most popular lodging options for Allenberry's fly-fishing guests.

All our lodging options include premium bedding, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and a Keurig coffee maker. The cottages function as standalone cabins, ranging in size from 1-5 bedrooms and feature the amenities of our lodges with an additional kitchenette. The lobbies located in Allenberry's Pine, Stone and Meadow lodges provide guests with a scenic view of the resort and the Yellow Breeches Creek, making it a comfortable and cozy space to drink a cup of coffee and plan out your fly-fishing agenda for the day.

The Still House, like the cottages, includes a living room and a kitchenette on the first floor and a master bedroom and private bath upstairs. The Still House also includes a deck perched above the Yellow Breeches Creek. The Creekside House, a lodging option popular among larger groups, comes equipped with a wraparound kitchen and a large deck overlooking the Yellow Breeches Creek, in addition to the amenities included with the lodging at Allenberry Resort.

Allenberry Resort offers two on-site dining spaces: The Barn Restaurant and The Breeches Bakery and Cafe. The Barn Restaurant serves a wide range of fare using seasonal farm-to-table ingredients in a rustic setting. The Barn Restaurant serves both lunch and dinner, along with Sunday brunch. Additionally, The Breeches Bakery and Cafe offers breakfast sandwiches, coffee beverages, other specialty coffee drinks, and baked goods, including Allenberry's famous sticky buns.

However, for those who prefer to unwind after their fly-fishing trips, Allenberry Resort hosts an onsite full-service spa, Changes Salon and Day Spa, and an onsite theater, The Playhouse at Allenberry, to keep guests relaxed and entertained.

Food & Drink:

Allenberry Resort's flagship restaurant serves a wide range of delicious fare using seasonal farm-to-table ingredients and innovative flavors in a rustic chic setting. Join us at The Barn Restaurant for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. At The Barn, we are focused on delivering a homegrown experience using innovative techniques and a few unusual flavor combinations.

What is Provided:

Allenberry Resort has the ability to outfit any of our guests with all necessary rental equipment from the nearby fly shop and partner, TCO Fly Shop. Guests are, of course, welcome to bring their own equipment, if desired.

Gear Recommendations:

We suggest a 8 1/2 or 9-foot, 4 or 5-wt. rod for our trout trips and a 9-foot 7-wt. for smallmouth floats. Our guides will also have rods available to borrow for your guided fly-fishing trips. Sunscreen is a must during the summer. Wet-wading is fine, but most folks use waders when out on the creeks. As mentioned before, rain gear is highly recommended for a comfortable fly-fishing trip in inclement weather.

What to Bring:

Guests should bring layers if they're visiting during the colder months of fall and winter. We encourage any clothes that are appropriate for the season that will keep you warm and comfortable during any fishing trip, including rain gear to keep you dry in inclement weather.

If you're taking advantage of Allenberry's other outdoor activities during your stay, you may want to consult our Outdoor Activities Director, Cody Meassick, on the types of clothes and equipment you should bring beforehand.

Of course, if you wish to take pictures of your catches or the nearby scenery, it is highly recommended that you bring a camera to document your adventure.

Season:

All of our trout species (brook, brown, rainbow) can be fished 365 days a year with the best hatches occurring April through mid-June. With limestone spring creeks nearby, we always have good trout fishing, even in mid-summer. We fish for smallmouth bass in the spring, summer, and fall with the best topwater action in late summer.

Species:

We fish a number of species at Allenberry Resort. Rainbow and brown trout on the Yellow Breeches Creek (on-property) and nearby Big Spring Creek Greenway. Brown trout on the historic Letort Spring Creek, which is also nearby. Native Eastern brook trout can be found on the higher-elevation freestone streams, while smallmouth bass can be found on the Juniata and Susquehanna float trips with the occasional muskellunge.

Region/Terrain:

Being the closest Orvis-Endorsed lodge to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., Allenberry Resort offers a wide range of fly-fishing packages, including multiple-day packages on local waterways to one-day fly-fishing packages aimed at satisfying both the beginner or experienced fly fisher. Our fly-fishing packages, customizable for experienced anglers and ranging from walk/wading to floats, combined with our range of lodging options, create the perfect weekend fly-fishing getaway for those visiting from the more metropolitan areas.

Additionally, we host expertly guided fly-fishing schools from April to October with instruction in knot-tying, casting, gear and tackle introduction, feeding habits, fly selection, water currents, wading safety, and environmentally-conscious methods of catching and releasing fish.

Highlights of the local region and terrain are different limestone streams, whether that be the famous Yellow Breeches, designated as a Pennsylvania Scenic River, and beginning in Michaux State Forest, or the local Big Spring Creek Greenway. On a float trip, guests can enjoy the quiet Juniata River or the massive and versatile expanse of the famous Susquehanna River.

Typical Weather:

Yellow Breeches water temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the year due cold feeder streams that enter the creek year-round.

Spring: Temperatures range from the high 40s F to the mid 60s with the appropriate sun. Sunlight can last, on the longest days, from 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. (10-12 hours). There's an average chance of rain on any given spring day. This is widely considered the best time to fish the Yellow Breeches because of the numerous hatches.

Summer: Temperatures range from the low 70s to on the hottest days to the high 90s (usually beginning in July and lasting through the end of August). The end of August is a preferred season for fly-fishing due to a white fly hatch.

Fall: Temperatures range from the mid 60s to the low 40s. This is the perfect season to fish streamers in the nearby waters.

Winter: Temperatures range from the 30s to the teens. If you bundle up, successful fly-fishing trips can be had all year long.
