Yes, but there are certain rules of thumb to follow. It’s best to get your dog used to traveling in the car for long stretches of time gradually. Try to wait until they’re housebroken, but if you have to take them on a long car trip, stop at least once an hour for breaks. Plan your route to include dog-friendly spots where you can go for a leashed walk, or find a local dog park to run and play—a tired dog is likely to sleep the miles away. Pack their favorite dog toys for long stretches on the road, and double check that you didn’t forget the essentials: plenty of food and water, poop bags, medicines, and a comfy travel dog bed or blanket. Bring towels to dry off wet or muddy paws, and cleaning supplies to deal with carsickness or accidents. Find more info in our tips for traveling with dogs.
Check to see if your state requires dog restraints in the car, then designate “their” area where they’ll be safe and secure. A safety harness, seatbelt-style dog restraint system, or a travel crate are the safest ways for a dog to travel in the car. Being contained helps keep your buddy from distracting the driver or getting thrown from the car in a crash. Learn more about how to restrain your dog in the car, along with safety tips on traveling with a dog with anxiety.
We have all the dog essentials you need for travel, from road-ready car restraints to crates, bowls, and other basics for your best bud’s comfort and safety. Never leave home without a tough dog collar and leash embroidered with your phone number—it’s your best bet to find your best friend if the two of you get separated away from home. When it’s time to load up and go, cover your car seats or cargo area with our velvety-soft, durable Grip-Tight® microfiber protectors. Our hammock-style seat protectors fit over the front and backseat headrests to form a soft, secure area for your pup. If your buddy rides shotgun, choose our bucket seat protector. The rugged, water-resistant fabric stops moisture and sharp toenails, and the cozy cushioning is sooo comfy for your dog. We offer sturdy crates made for travel, and folding crates that make a reassuring den when you get there. For ultimate safety, buckle up your pal with our sturdy dog car restraint—it doubles as a walking harness, so it’s great for one-and-done packing. Your dog will appreciate the luxury of their own RecoveryZone® dog bed for adventure travel, or pack our convenient hose-off pad that’s perfect for the campsite. Remember the kibble and water—we love taking our roomy dog travel tote on the road because it easily holds supplies, bowls, the first aid kit, and other gear. Throw in a couple of dog toys, and you’ll have one happy traveler.
