To start Euro-nymphing, you’ll need a 9- to 11-foot rod, a reel, fly line, weighted flies or split-shot, and an indicator leader. Our guide to European nymphing gives you detailed information about rod selection, setups, and the basics of the technique.
Choose your European nymphing rod in the 9’–11’ range built to toss 2- to 4-weight lines. They’re all characterized by thick butt sections and fine, ultra-responsive mid and tip sections. We recommend our Recon Fly Rod.
For a European nymphing rod, select a 9’–11’ built for 2- to 4-weight lines.
No, you don’t necessarily need a special reel for European nymphing although many makers are manufacturing heavier reels to respond better to the technique. You do need a reel that delivers a silky drag. We recommend our Hydros II Euro Reel.
Typically, you’ll want flies sized between 8 and 22 for Euro nymphing. If you’re not sure what to choose, 12, 14, and 16 are popular standard sizes.
Euro-style nymphing is a surefire way to land more trout, and our European Nymphing Collection is brimming with the rods, line, and flies you need to start. Entice subsurface feeders with the ideal Euro-nymphing flies—a little weight here, a bit of flash there, and you’ll earn that telltale tug on the line. Our collection includes seasoned anglers’ favorite nymphing patterns. These flies are proven to perform, cast after cast. Catch the attention of even the most selective trout with realistic flies that sink quickly to win strikes. This collection also includes Euro-nymphing fly rods with impressive feel and deadly accuracy perfectly suited to the technique, as seen in our Helios™ 3 Blackout Fly Rod. These rods provide the sensitivity to promptly detect strikes and the backbone to land the catch. Finish your rig with Euro-nymphing fly line meant to keep things tight, and indicator tippet that offers plenty of visibility. Explore gear that conforms to competitive equipment standards, or combine techniques to create a Euro-inspired rig to suit your style.
