The Story

The Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing School is hosted by Wequassett Resort & Golf Club in East Harwich, MA, and takes full advantage of its location on the elbow of Cape Cod, which is often regarded as one of the best places in the world to sight fish for striped bass in shallow water.

The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is an awe-inspiring property that features 27 acres of pristine seasonal gardens, golf courses, five-star dining, and breathtaking views. The resort also offers elegant accommodations that’ll make you feel at home, with the added benefit of luxury.

At the school you will learn from expert Orvis instructors with hands on casting instruction. We teach the Orvis Progressive Method of Fly-Casting and specialize in working with novice anglers and anglers looking to improve their skills. You will learn saltwater specific tactics, how to choose your gear, and techniques to prepare you for a day on the water. You'll cover it all at the Cape Cod Fly-Fishing School.

Cancellation Policy & Fees:
If the reservation is cancelled 60+ days from your school date, Orvis will offer a full refund back to the original method of payment, or the reservation can be transferred to another available school. If the reservation is cancelled 30-60 days from the date of the school, the customer will have a choice between a refund of 50% or transferring the reservation to another available school. On cancellations 29 days or less there is no refund and no transfer. There will be no refund extended to students who do not attend their scheduled school and do not notify the school within the timeframes listed in this policy. Any reservation that has been transferred to a different date cannot be later cancelled without 100% payment penalty.

SECOND DAY

9:00AM: Classroom presentation – Bait and fly selection. Notes on fish feeding behavior

10:00AM: Video part 3: Advanced casting and The Double-Haul

10:15AM: Outside Instruction and practice – Reviewing fundamentals and addressing distance. Demonstration and practice on double haul; students casting

12:00AM: Lunch

1:00AM: Outside instruction – continued practice. Demonstration on fish fighting, fish handling and photography and casting techniques for windy conditions; students casting

2:30AM: Classroom discussion on developing understanding of tides and fishing locations. Reading the water. Notes on essential gear and tackle

3:30AM: Wrap-up discussion and recommendations for what comes next: further instruction and guided trips, Orvis endorsed services, locations, and resources

The Orvis Cape Cod Fly Fishing School is held at the Wequassett Resort & Golf Club in East Harwich, MA. The majority of students will stay on site. Do I need a fishing license?

A fishing license is not required.

When is the best time to go?

The offered dates correspond with preparation for and coincide with this seasonal fishery. There are no good or bad times to attend.

When does the school start and end? What will we be doing during the day?

What’s included in the price of the school?

Use of Orvis fly rods/reels, leaders, flies and equipment and two full days of instruction by an Orvis instructor. Lunch is also included.

What are students responsible for?

Students are responsible for lodging, breakfast, dinner and lodging.

What do I need to bring?

Is lodging included?

No. Lodging arrangements are made separately by the students.

Do Orvis students receive a discount for Lodging at the resort?

Yes, students who book will receive a discount information in their school confirmation email.

Lunch is the only meal included.

How many people will be in the class?

Depending on the school it will range between four and eight students, always with a ratio of one instructor for every four students.

Do we stop the school because of weather?

No, the school goes on rain or shine. We recommend that students bring rain gear. The school will be cancelled only if conditions are dangerous to students.

Can you bring your own equipment?

Yes, but it’s not required.

Is this class for intermediate anglers?

Yes. In casting, we adjust our instruction to the individual student’s level.

How old do my children have to be to join me in this fishing school?

Students should be at least 12 years old (because of the heavier tackle used).

What other recreation is available near the school?

Are there opportunities for guided fishing afterwards?

Yes. After the school, students can arrange for a variety of guided fishing trips by contacting the resort. All guided trips are dependent on availability.

Will I be able to attend the same class as my friend or family member even though I’m an intermediate and they are a beginner?

Yes. In casting, we adjust our instruction to the individual student’s level.
