Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Guide
Enjoy unforgettable fly fishing in the Florida Keys with Orvis-endorsed guide Capt. Mike Weikert:
If you haven't sight-fished in the Keys before, you are in for a special experience. Fish are pursued in water depths from 10 inches to six feet. Ninety percent of the time, you actually get to see the fish eat the fly in crystal-clear water. Because the water is so clear and the fish wary, you will need to bring your "A" game in casting. Not as proficient as you would like to be? Not a problem! I pride myself on being able to help my anglers to improve their skillsnot just for the day, but for a lifetime of fishing."
I fish from a Maverick flats skiff, powered by a Yamaha 70 hp engine. I provide the finest gear Orvis has to offer."
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

If you choose to bring your own gear we mostly use rods in the 8-12 wt. with a 10-foot tapered leader. I can tie you a leader if need be and provide flies.
Flats skiffs are small try to keep your gear to a minimum. When booking your trip we can go into detail.
In early fall, before the cold fronts, start anything is possible. During the winter, again it's all about weather/water temperature but reds, snook, and small tarpon are the best game. In early spring, it's about permit. As the water warms, the tarpon begin to move in. We have resident tarpon but spring is when the big numbers begin to show.
Depending on the time of year and current weather conditions, I fish for tarpon, permit, bonefish, snook, redfish and a host of others. So even if the weather is not what we could wish, we can still have fun.
I fish the middle and lower Keys, depending on the time of year and your location.
Our weather is about as good as it gets in the U.S. In winter, if we have a strong cold front, the air temp can get as low as mid 50s but most of the time it's in the low 70s. In spring, it begins to warm into the 80s but almost never goes over 90. However, it can be pretty humid, so be prepared.
Rates start from: $500 for half day to $700 for a full day.

I provide all the gear and tackle that is necessary, as well as licenses and drinking water. All you need is clothing that provides sun protection, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses. Amber is the best color for our water.
All this fishing is catch-and-release, so we can continue to enjoy this fabulous fishery into the future.
