The Story

Enlist the services of Orvis-endorsed guide Capt. Natalie Vaz on your fly-fishing trip to Alaska. Our trips are based in Gustavus, Alaska or Hoonah, Alaska, each with a population of less than 900. Situated just a 15-minute flight away from Juneau, our location is perfect for those who want to explore more beyond Alaska’s capital city without spending too much time in transit.

Natalie grew up fishing in Gustavus and started Natventure Tours in 2015 when she was in high school. She loves to help new anglers catch their first fish and help experienced anglers learn the tricks of the local rivers. She likes to ensure that her guests feel taken care of like friends or family, rather than just as a “customer”.

Many of our trips take place on rivers within the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the nation. For these trips we will boat to a remote island where we will be dropped off for the day. We will then hike and fish along the river until the boat returns to pick us up. We access these rivers with a special-use permit, meaning we rarely see any other anglers. However, while people are rare, bears are plentiful. Chichagof Island has more brown bears per square mile than anywhere else on the planet.

Our other trips access rivers by kayak or vehicle. Kayaks are used to reach fishing spots that are not accessible by foot and vehicles are used to access fishing spots along old logging roads within the Tongass National Forest.

We hope to take you on a “Natventure” here in Alaska. We are certain you will not be disappointed.

Is fishing with bears safe?

The bears are typically just as busy fishing as we are and do not pay us much attention. Guests will be provided with bear spray and instruction on how to use it, and your guide will carry a firearm.

Is there a weight limit for the kayaking trip?

235 pounds is the typical weight limit. If you are tall (over 6 feet) then we might be able to accommodate guests slightly over this weight.

What if I am handicapped?

Accessibility outdoors is very important to us. We want to make sure that everyone who wants to fish can fish. If you think that a physical challenge may make our trips difficult for you, please let us know. We are happy to try and figure out a way to get your line in the water.
