Cross Current Guide Service & Outfitters
2010 and 2019 Orvis-Endorsed Freshwater Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year. Our home is the Upper Delaware River system that forms the natural border between Pennsylvania and New York. Rated as one of the finest wild trout fisheries in the US, the Delaware system encompasses up to 80 miles of trout water that we fish by wading and driftboat. Rivers such as the East Branch, West Branch, Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, and Delaware are the birthplace of fly fishing in America. Join us for a day or more of exploring these waters. In the summer we also fly or spin fish for smallmouth bass on a section of river that has been rated in the top five smallmouth rivers. Corporate and private groups are welcome.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

A typical day on the water is anything but typical. The only absolute we have found in fly fishing is that things change. For this reason it's best if you have a flexible start and finish time in order to take full advantage of what the fishing conditions offer. In any event, a full-day fishing trip is no less than 8 hours on the water. Having said that, here are a few expectations for an itinerary. In April plan on starting around 9am and finishing at dusk. By May the start time will probably adjust to 10am with a dusk ending and by summer you'll be looking at starting about 11 or 12. We also sometimes suggest split days (early morning and late afternoon) when conditions warrant it and it fits our client’s schedule.
On all our trips we provide the use of any necessary tackle. On full-day trips lunch and soft drinks are provided. We always have the right flies should you not have them. Loaner waders are also available depending on sizing. But, most of all, our commitment to do the best we can for you!
On our trips and on most others, you should bring sunglasses, rain jacket, hat, sunblock, leaders, waders, fishing tackle as appropriate, light jacket/fleece, and any other personal item you'd like to have along.
Most years we're trout fishing by April 15, but when the spring comes early, we start early. Trout fishing goes through mid-October (sometimes later). Smallmouth bass fishing begins in late June and continues into October.
In April and continuing into October the insects begin hatching and bring the on the dry-fly action. Early season fishing is drifting and often streamer fishing until any early hatches start. From late April through October the Delaware system is known for its excellent dry-fly fishing but when the fish are not on the surface we also use various nymphing techniques, wet flies, and streamers.
The Upper Delaware System offers the experience of big river wild trout fishing and wade fishing in small to medium-sized water, some with the feel and technicality of a spring creek. With few exceptions, the rivers and streams are easily waded with an easy bottom and slow-to-medium currents. We fish via driftboat, wading, or driftboat and wading. It all depends on the river and water conditions.
The season here begins in April, where you can experience several weather changes in just one day, so layering warm clothing and rain gear is a must. As the season progresses, you'll find May to be cool in the early part to warmer later in the month, but in all instances a fleece or jacket and rain gear should be with you on the water throughout the season. You'll find summertime evenings and mornings often dropping into the 50s.
