The Story

Dunton Hot Springs and River Camp sit in the remote West Dolores Valley just across the mountain from Telluride, Colorado. Situated along 9 miles of private water on the West Fork of the Dolores River, Dunton offers some of the finest small stream trout fishing in the Southwest. Managed as a wild trout fishery, Dunton does not stock any fish into this all natural river. The Dolores River drainage is one of the finest in the state. You’ll find no crowds here and can enjoy miles of some of the least pressured small stream fishing in the state. Holding Brown, Brook, Rainbow, and Native Cutthroat trout, the West Dolores offers an easy chance to catch the elusive Super Slam (4 species in one day), and full day trips are run with this achievement in mind.

As a premier fly-fishing destination, Dunton is a fishing lodge where guests enjoy unlimited access to a full range of complimentary fly-fishing gear and equipment, fly-casting & tying lessons (both included on certain days or private at your leisure). Guided float trips with with our Orvis Endorsed partners, Duranglers, on the San Juan River below Navajo Dam or the Animas River (when flows allow) are also available.

  • Cutthroat, Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout
  • Located on the upper West Dolores River, a completely wild fishery
  • Top-notch guides who care deeply for the conservation of our fishery
  • Rates start from $365 for a Half-Day Wade (Guide gratuity included in the price of excursion)
  • On average May to October—Pre-runoff fishing always an option

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Dunton Hot Springs is a romantic 1800s ghost town set in an extraordinary alpine valley. Our resort offers a variety of day and overnight packages, and the entire town can be rented exclusively for corporate retreats, family reunions and weddings. Dunton Hot Springs is a small and exclusive resort nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. This perfectly restored ghost town thrives on contradictions; hand- hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, sensuous hot springs beneath shimmering snowbanks. This romantic old mining town still provides high speed wireless internet access in every cabin and video conferencing in our dance hall to the comforting sound of a tumbling waterfall.

Dunton River Camp

This former cattle ranch dates back to the late 1800’s with the farmhouse sitting in its original location about 20 feet from the West Fork of the Dolores River; and showcasing approximately 500 acres of peaceful fields, meadows and forest providing endless opportunity for exploring and adventure. A large part of the land is still used for free range cattle grazing, but we have kept the area where the tents and the farmhouse are protected. There are a total of eight safari style tents, each sitting on a 640-square foot wooden platform anchored to bedrock.

Our tents have all the amenities you would expect to find in a luxury hotel including en-suite bathrooms with 6-foot soaker tub/showers, on-demand hot water, double vanities and even towel warmers. Each tent is assigned two mountain bikes for guests’ use during their stay. This provides guests the opportunity to explore trails or just bike on the road at their leisure. There are incredible hikes leading directly from the camp, and our Guest Services team is always available and happy to drive guests to neighboring local trail heads for exploration further abroad. Whether fishing for hours in our wonderful trout-rich river just steps from your tent or relaxing in the sauna sitting right beside that same river, there is no better place to unwind.

A member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux and the only 2 Key Awarded Michelin Resort in Colorado, Dunton offers all-inclusive luxury in the heart of the San Juan National Forest. Our culinary team painstakingly sources local organic foods such as lamb from meadows that spawn fields of boletus and chanterelles, as well as tree-ripe fruit and plump vegetables from our own farm and vineyard. With wines to match the food, replete with first growth Bordeaux, California classics, super Tuscans and lusty Aussie favorites, as well as our own Sutcliffe Vineyards wines, meals at Dunton are not to be missed. Dunton allows guests to be totally immersed in nature, get “dirty”, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; yet still be able to freshen up, have a nice cocktail by the fire-pit at the Saloon, enjoy a wonderful dinner with old and new friends, and end the evening with a nightcap at our Historic Bar. It truly is the best of both worlds!

Is the water on property safe to drink?

Our water originates from a mountain spring in a coal cave up the mountain and is filtered three times. It is first filtered by the coal and once it arrives in the town it is filtered and UV treated.

Where are meals served?

All meals are served in the Saloon, the historic hub of the town at Dunton Hot Springs, and in the Historic Farmhouse at Dunton River Camp

What can I expect for weather during my time at Dunton Hot Springs?

  • Spring (April–June): Almost always sunny, wet and snow are usually still around through early May.
  • Summer (July–August): Warm, sunny days, (on and off afternoon, monsoon-like thunderstorms).
  • Fall (September–November): Foliage starts mid-September. Warm sunny days, with cooler evenings.
  • Winter (December-March): Almost always sunny, snow will usually start at the end of October–November.

Because of Dunton’s elevation, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Always drink plenty of water—dehydration sets in much faster and the dry air makes it hard to stay hydrated. If guests are coming from sea level or a lower elevation one alcoholic beverage usually equates to 2–3 alcoholic beverages.

Altitude sickness can happen quickly, with symptoms such as a headache, dizziness, and nausea. To help, drink water and get plenty of rest. We do have some small oxygen containers if there is an emergency.
