Fly Fishing Costa Rica
Orvis-endorsed outfitter Fly Fishing Costa Rica specializes in the finest fly-fishing (and sometimes light-tackle) adventures in Costa Rica with an emphasis on positive local impact, diverse cultural exposure, and overall superb angler experience. By integrating top-quality fly fishing, the right balance of roughing it and comfort, a bit of local flavor, and an air of authentic adventure, we ensure you experience an unforgettable trip. Being based in Costa Rica gives us a clear advantage in the region. We have our fingers on the pulse and our toes in the sand, spending time on the water with clients and on our own, refining our local knowledge, exploring new and hard-to-reach waters and species, and developing exciting programs to offer the fly-fishing world. We see a great deal of potential in our small but extremely biodiverse country, and we are in the business of pushing ourselves and the sport of fly fishing to bring our clients the very best the destination has to offer. Whether you seek heart-pounding triple-digit tarpon, powerful roosterfish and billfish, delicate dry-fly or tenkara fishing for rainbow trout, connecting with an array of warm water exotics, or combining many species into a custom-built angling quest around this pristine country, Fly Fishing Costa Rica is your number-one resource for planning and executing the tropical fishing adventure of a lifetime.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica, Fly Fishing Costa Rica can help suggest locations and hotels that both fit your budget and are close to your desired experience or fishery. We’re familiar with fantastic options countrywide, ranging from the beaches of Guanacaste to the remote Osa Peninsula, and from the high-altitude cloud forest to the lowland rainforests. For those who are just looking for a day of fishing, we are happy to help you get on the water for the day with a member of our network of vetted guides. If you’re looking for a full-on adventure, Fly Fishing Costa Rica can help you plan the multi-day trip of a lifetime, experiencing all that the country has to offer.
Fly Fishing Costa Rica prides itself on creating custom experiences, as we realize that each client is unique. Some may want to board a sportfisher for roosterfish and stay in luxury hotels. Others may want to sleep in rustic cabinas, wading for rainbow trout in the mountains and fishing for machaca from a drift boat. It’s always best to contact us to help create a custom itinerary that fits your budget.
A sample multi-day itinerary might look like the following: Day 1: Pickup at SJO airport in San Jose, travel to cabinas in the cloud forest Day 2: Full day rainbow trout fishing, meals and gear included Day 3: Travel to Pacific Coast, afternoon touring national parks, stay at ocean-view hotel Day 4: Full day inshore fishing for roosterfish Day 5: Full day offshore fishing for sailfish and tuna Day 6: Return to San Jose
OR
Day 1: Pickup in San Jose and transfer to the Jungle Tarpon Reserve, fishing that afternoon Day 2-6: Full day tarpon fishing, all meals, lodging, and tackle included Day 7: Morning tarpon fishing, midday transfer to San Jose
For those just looking for a day trip, a sample machaca float would look like this: Meet at 7:00 or 8:00 AM at the designated point on the river. All gear and flies included. The float lasts 5–6 hours, with a stop for lunch and/or snacks/fruit (provided). Two anglers maximum per boat, but additional boats can be coordinated for larger groups.
Costa Rica is famous for its incredible wildlife and natural beauty. Costa Rica holds 5% of the world’s biodiversity, even though it accounts for only 0.25% of the land mass. Two oceans and a variety of rivers and lakes allow the fly fisher to target many different species, all within a small geographic space. One can focus on a particular fishery or spread a trip across the entire range of available fish species. Costa Rica is also a very family-friendly destination. It’s easy to combine angling activities with non-angling or family activities like other adventure sports (rafting, sea kayaking, surfing, ziplining), wildlife watching, wellness programs, or just a day at the beach. We know this country inside and out and can help put together the perfect experience.
Travel to Costa Rica has become easier over the years with many direct flights to the capital city of San Jose (SJO international airport). Even so, a San Jose overnight is often required at the beginning and end of your trip.
Most nationalities do not need a special visa to enter Costa Rica. A valid passport is required, and upon entering Costa Rica travelers are granted a 90-day tourist visa. Some countries will require a special visa. Inquire with us or your local Costa Rica embassy to be sure.
Costa Rica is a very safe country, but caution should be taken like in any other place – especially in major cities like San Jose. We recommend using private taxis when traveling in San Jose at night. And if traveling countrywide in a rental car, it’s advised that you don’t leave your luggage inside if you’re going to leave your car somewhere— luggage is best left in your hotel.
Costa Rica is very proud of the fact that tap water can be safely consumed everywhere in the country. Even so, we provide reusable water bottles on most trips and refills with filtered water will be available.
Many people are worried about the wildlife in Costa Rica, but your chances of encountering anything venomous are quite slim. In reality, your biggest concern is the sun. Costa Rica is near the equator, so the sun is very powerful here. Be sure to bring plenty of strong sunscreen. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in some areas, but a couple of squirts of DEET will keep the biting insects away.
USD (and sometimes Euros) are accepted in many places, but we recommend exchanging some money to the local currency (Colones). Most of our programs cover everything for your tour (meals, transport, etc.) but we recommend exchanging some money to purchase alcohol, souvenirs, laundry, roadside fruit, etc. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted around the country.
There is cellular coverage in all but the most remote of places. Phone and internet are available through local networks should you decide to activate your carrier’s roaming feature. Local SIM cards can also be purchased at the SJO airport for a nominal fee. Alternatively, Wi-Fi is available in most of the lodgings we work with.
We strongly recommend or even require third-party insurance for many of our programs. We are happy to help you find the right provider should you need it.
