The Story

The Limay River Lodge is ideally located in the middle of 50 miles of secluded tailwater. Blessed with large, feisty rainbows and hungry, aggressive browns, this fishery is unlike any other in northern Patagonia. With constant water flows and abundant food, the fish grow big here, with fish over five pounds not uncommon. The placid flows offer many opportunities for dry fly fishing, and options abound for boat wade and float fishing. As if that’s not enough, the Limay Medio has a secret jackpot—large migratory browns enter the river throughout the year and give every angler a chance to catch the fish of a lifetime. With average-size browns of 20-25 inches and some ranging from 6-18 pounds, this is one of the best places in the world to catch monster-sized brown trout. But don’t forget the rainbows! They range from 16-24 inches and fight like fish twice their size.

The lodge, opened in 2014, was founded and is run by Argentine legend Jorge Trucco. After years of exploring this part of Patagonia, he settled on this ideal tailwater location. Supported by experienced professional guides on the water, every guest will receive a customized fishing experience matching their expertise level, from novice to expert. With excellent cuisine and comfortable accommodations, the Limay River Lodge is an angler’s dream come true.

The Limay River is a large scenic river that originates at Nahuel Huapi Lake and flows 200 miles northeast to its confluence with the Rio Negro. Along the way is a section known as the Limay Medio, or Middle Limay. Situated between two large reservoirs, this is the water that makes the Limay so very special. Formed as a bottom release from Piedra del Águila dam, the Limay flows crystal clear for over 50 miles to the next reservoir. With steady flows and abundant food, rainbow and brown trout grow to enormous sizes here. The smooth currents in much of the river make it a dry-fly paradise. Although a big river, the flow is broken into countless side channels that provide many opportunities to stop and wade or target rising fish. In addition to large resident trout, very large migratory browns also enter the river all season from the downriver reservoir. These silvery fish can easily exceed 10 pounds and 30 inches in length.
