The Story

The Orvis Chesapeake Bay 2-Day Combo Fly Fishing School takes place on the picturesque Solomons Island, Maryland, conveniently located just a short drive from both Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Students will learn to cast and fish right at the mouth of the Patuxent River, where it meets the majestic Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States and the third largest in the world. It's a semi-enclosed coastal body of water where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the ocean, stretching from the Susquehanna River to the Atlantic Ocean.

During the 2-Day Combo School, the first day you take part in casting lessons with focus on the double-haul, learn about the tackle selection—specific to both freshwater and saltwater fishing, fly selection, leaders, and knots. Our goal is to have students exit the program with the ability to handle casts of 50 feet or more effectively and apply fishing techniques when fishing from a boat. Day two, you’ll practice your skills on a guided fishing charter out of the famous Solomons Island, provided by the Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter Rock On Charter Fishing. Students will fish the Patuxent River or the main stem of the Chesapeake Bay. Target fish species, depending on the time of year and conditions, will include stripers, redfish, and trout. Two anglers per boat.

You will have hands-on instruction in:

  • Fly casting techniques—including the double-haul
  • Rods, reels, lines, and fly selection—specific to both freshwater and saltwater fishing
  • Knots, knot tying, and fly tying
  • Hook setting and fish fighting—with an emphasis on “BIG” fish
  • Practicing your skills with a second day fishing charter provided by the Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter Rock On Charter Fishing (two anglers per boat)
