Mossy Creek Fly Fishing
Come experience the best fly fishing Virginia has to offer! Our fly shop is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley only minutes away from spring creek brown trout on the famous Mossy Creek. We are also surrounded by wild brook trout in the freestone mountain streams of The George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park. We fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass, musky, and carp on the Shenandoah and James Rivers. Our shop also manages many stretches of private trophy trout water on local spring creeks and rivers. Private and corporate fly fishing lessons and clinics are available at our schools in Harrisonburg or Wintergreen Resort, Virginia.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

New clients will typically meet at the fly shop at a pre-determined time. Return clients may meet at the shop, boat ramp, or designated meeting area for their trip. Guides will ensure folks are outfitted properly for fishing before heading out. Half days allow for 4 hours on the water and full days allow for 8 hours on the water. Guides will assist with any instruction or technique throughout the day if the angler chooses.
We supply waders, boots, rods, reels, lines, drinks, lunch(full days), flies, leaders, tippet, and all terminal tackle free of charge.
Camera, sunglasses, hat, rain jacket, fishing license.
We typically fish for trout year round if the weather and water conditions are stable. Float trips for smallmouth bass typically last from early April-September. We target carp during the spring and summer float trips, and musky are available fall, winter, spring, and early summer.
Shenandoah Valley Virginia. We are surrounded by 2,200 miles of wild trout water in the mountains to our east and west. Larger freestone streams and spring creeks are available as well as warm water fisheries for smallmouth and largemouth bass, carp, and musky along the valley floor.
Spring is our peak trout fishing season. The insects typically start hatching in March and water flow in our trout streams is typically good. Temperatures can range from below freezing to the mid 60's in March and it can be windy. April through June are our most popular months for fishing. The weather is typically mild and the insect activity is in peak. High water from afternoon thunderstorms is the biggest threat to fishing in the springtime. Summer is typically hot and so is the smallmouth bass fishing and the terrestrial fishing on the spring creeks. Expect temperatures to reach the upper 90's or even the low 100's in July through August. Fall brings mild temperatures and cool nights. It is typically dry in the fall and water levels may be low. Winter can be cold but our musky and trout fishing is solid.
Your guide will be in contact with you a few days before your trip. The guide will suggest the best time to meet to get started based on current fishing conditions and insect hatches.
We typically book up to 3 months in advance for our peak season trout and bass fishing and weekends are sometimes booked 6 months in advance. We recommend booking very early for the best possible dates.
Our goal is to ensure a quality experience every time on the water with us. If the weather, water conditions, or even the fishing quality is expected to be marginal or poor, we will discuss options and cancel/reschedule if necessary.
Virginia Freshwater License is required for all fishing. The GW Forest License is required for any fishing in the GW Forest and the trout license is required ONLY in VA State stocked waters.
