The Story

The North Carolina Fly Fishing School is located in western North Carolina at our Orvis Asheville Retail Store in the Biltmore Park Town Square. Nearby rivers include the North Mills, the West Fork of the Pigeon, and the Davidson, one of the Trout Unlimited Top 100 streams in America. The Asheville Store is 10 minutes from the Asheville Airport and 2 hours from Charlotte International Airport. Instruction is geared toward beginners, but students of all levels are welcome and encouraged to progress at their own rate. Our teaching methods allow us to handle even experienced fly casters. Indoor and outdoor sessions are evenly divided, with the main emphasis placed on developing proper fly-casting skills. Our goal is to have students exit the program with the ability to handle 30-plus-foot casts efficiently, have a thorough understanding of fly selection, leaders, knot-tying, reading water, etiquette, and the applications and use of related gear and equipment in both moving and still water. We also encourage an appreciation for fine tackle and emphasize the importance of the catch-and-release ethic, a clean and healthy outdoor environment, and the continued pursuit of quality fly-fishing experiences through the promotion of our Orvis-Endorsed Lodge and Guide services.

You'll cover it all at the North Carolina Fly Fishing School:

  • Fly casting techniques
  • Essential fly fishing knots
  • How to choose your gear and tackle
  • Stream entomolgy (the science of insects)
  • Proper fly selection
  • How to read water and currents
  • How to play, land, and safely release fish

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.
