An Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Guide in Saratoga Springs, New York.
100% customer satisfaction has been our commitment since 1856. It's who we are. If you aren't happy with a product or service, we want to know about it. And we'll make it right.
THAT'S THE ORVIS WAY.
Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Guide
Go fly fishing in the Saratoga Springs region of New York and enlist the help of Orvis-Endorsed guide Ralph Yusavage. Saratoga is 'the summer place to be.' A beautiful, historical 'city in the country,' we sit at the foothills of the Adirondacks, just to the west of the Hudson River. Centrally located, it's just a three-hour drive from Manhattan, Boston, or Montreal. Tourists have made the pilgrimage to Saratoga Springs for centuries, whether to enjoy the healing qualities of our natural mineral springs or to test their luck at our thoroughbred track (the oldest operating sporting venue in North America. If you've been here for our racing season you know how beautiful it is.
Ralph has over 12 years of experience as a fly fishing guide and Orvis school casting instructor. He has made his home directly on the bank of the Battenkill, just a quick and beautiful drive from either Manchester, Vermont or Saratoga Springs, New York. No matter the season, our region offers great angling opportunities for trout, smallmouth bass, and carp on one of 5 different rivers. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned veteran, you'll be treated to the best fly fishing experience the region has to offer.
"As Saratoga Springs' only endorsed guide, I'll pick you up at your hotel or bed and breakfast the morning of our trip with fresh, locally roasted coffee and breakfast snacks. From there, we will make the short commute (30-40 minutes) through idyllic countryside to where we put the boat in. You'll get individualized instruction based on your experience level. I love working with absolute beginners and I offer specific trips to accommodate. Ask about 'dark day' specials for my fellow racing fans."
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Wet wading shoes, these can be wading boots with neoprene socks, a pair of closed-toed sandals, or an old pair of sneakers.
A pair of sunglasses, amber polarized is best.
Clothes and a hat to keep the sun off of you. I prefer lightweight, quick-drying long sleeves, long pant. Sunscreen works, too.
I prefer you use my rods, but if you insist on using your own, anything from a 3 wt. for small dry flies to a 7 wt. for large streamers can be of use. A 6 wt. will be your best overall choice.
Any and all medications. An optional extra change of clothes in case you happen to get wet. These can be left in the vehicle.
April 1-July 4: We will mostly be targeting trout. The best dry-fly fishing of the season usually starts in May and lasts through early June.
July 4-Sept. 15: It's bass season! While there are opportunities to target trout, I prefer to target river small mouth bass.
Sept. 15-Dec. 1: As the fall sets in and the mercury drops, we get back to trout fishing. There can be some great action as the waters start to rise back up from their low summer volume and high temperatures.
Trout, small mouth bass, carp
Located in Saratoga Springs, we fish the southern Adirondacks to the Green Mountains of Vermont. The rivers are mostly small to mid-sized, with the Battenkill being our most famous.
In April, it is not uncommon to have snow on the ground still. It's best to be prepared for cool temperatures with an extra layer or two and a rain jacket. Waders are definitely needed.
By the time late May arrives the weather here starts to get great. Often times mornings near 50 and highs near 70 F. An extra fleece for the morning is usually all you'll need. You'll still want waders.
By mid July, we usually put the waders away until fall. If you've been here during track season, you know how great the weather is. Refreshing mornings and often pleasant daily highs, it's pretty rare that we go above 90 degrees or below 72 degrees this time of year.
