Perhaps it's the adrenaline rush at the first humming of a covey bursting upwards from the golden wiregrass. Perhaps it's the challenge of the shot as they missile into the skyline of the Longleaf pine forest. Perhaps it's the nostalgia of experiencing a sport long revered in America that hasn't changed in over 100 years.
Annie and Bill Atchison opened Rio Piedra Plantation twenty years ago and their son, Sam and his wife, Beth have since joined the operation. When asked why their guests return year after year, it's simple—it's real hunting. Many consider the 1950-1960s era as having been the peak for bobwhite quail in South Georgia. It's not. It's now. Habitat restoration efforts in recent decades have brought the birds back in the Plantation Belt—a narrow strip of land between Albany, GA and Tallahassee. Quail move freely between the vast private plantations here. And there is only one option open to traveling wingshooters—Rio Piedra Plantation. In fact, Rio Piedra is the only Orvis-endorsed lodge located in the Plantation Belt. The hunting here is as it was 50 or 100 years ago. The quail here aren't merely shot, they are hunted.
When the hunt is over, even those not yet under the spell of the bobwhite will surely enjoy relaxing in our beautiful, classically decorated lodge, and guest rooms. Your Rio Piedra experience begins at our two-story main lodge featuring vaulted ceilings, grand stone fireplaces and distinguished furnishings. As you enter the lodge, you'll notice the wrap around porches and patio. Guests linger here with picturesque views of the Flint River and the surrounding longleaf pine forest.
Make yourself at home in one of 10 Lodge rooms or four nearby guest cabins. Guest rooms feature fine furnishings and are well-appointed with private baths.
All meals are enjoyed at the main lodge amongst multiple dining areas which can accommodate both large groups or smaller private parties. Please see the dining section for more about our relaxed 5-star dining.
After dinner, relax at one of several fireplaces in and around the Lodge. Put your feet up, gaze up at the stars and savor memories of the day.
The lodge includes a Pro Shop stocked with logo souvenirs, hunting accessories, and Orvis apparel. Also available is our shooting platform with two throwers—complimentary for guests.
Prepare to be spoiled while dining at Rio Piedra. Guests compare our food to that of fine dining and for that we credit our classically-trained European chef of 20 years, Dirk Flachsmeier.
All dining is included—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an indulgent spread of hors d’oeuvres in the evening. Our lodge has two self-service bars with a variety of wines, popular liquors and mixers.
Each day starts with a Southern-style breakfast featuring fresh, hot biscuits, sausage gravy, bacon and perfectly cooked eggs. On the lighter side, opt for continental fare such as fruit, cereals, granola, and yogurt.
Lunch is usually "al fresco", weather permitting, served on a deck that stretches onto the Flint River or on one of the lodge patio areas. Savor homemade soups, house-smoked ribs, or plated salads. And don’t miss the blackberry cobbler a la mode!
The three-course dinner is served at 7:00 p.m. Chef Dirk crafts new quail entrees each season such as smoked quail breasts in a mushroom cream sauce over German spaetzle. Other entrée favorites are filet with lobster tail and Panko-crusted sea bass over spring pea risotto. All desserts are handcrafted in-house, including our Pecan Pie made with local pecans.
Briar pants or chaps are recommended for the field in addition to broken-in upland leather boots. We suggest layers for the ride to hunting areas on open-air jeeps. For safety, we recommend ample blaze orange, ideally a hat and a vest or shirt.
20 and 28 gauge shotguns are what most guest frequently use. We offer Orvis 20 gauge over-under shotguns for rent. Additionally, we offer .410, 20, 28 and 12 gauge shells for purchase. Guests are welcome to bring their own ammunition.

Wild bobwhite quail have been hunted here in Southwest Georgia, the Quail Capital, for well over 100 years. In the wake of the Civil War, families acquired large plantations, creating expansive hunting estates that today comprise the South Georgia Plantation Belt. Over the last hundred years, these mostly-private plantations committed immense resources to preserve and restore the vast longleaf pine forests that serve as quintessential bobwhite quail habitat. As a result, the region now boasts wild quail populations that are at historic highs. Knowing Rio Piedra borders some of the region's largest and most celebrated plantations, it's no wonder Rio Piedra provides quests with unparalleled quail hunting.
This region of deep South Georgia has always been known as the Quail Capital of the world. The land consists of gentle rolling terrain and pine savannah'a relatively open longleaf pine canopy and wire grass ground cover. "The Flint", a beautiful free-flowing river, bisects the plantation and provides a gorgeous backdrop as you take aim with either gun or camera. Knowing guests will hunt different areas each morning and afternoon, there is ample opportunity to experience various parts of the plantation. And there is sufficient hunting acreage to cover different terrain every day for two weeks.
Quail hunting is a fall and winter sport. That often means shirtsleeve hunting by afternoon, but a crackling fireplace feels good after the sun drops. Mornings are cooler. You will want to bring some kind of outerwear for the ride out to the hunting areas on-open air jeeps.

There are several options for getting to Rio Piedra. The closest commercial airport is Albany, GA (ABY), which is approximately a 30-minute drive. The closest private airport is Camilla Mitchell County (CXU) which is a short 15-minute drive. We offer airport transportation to both Camilla and Albany. Some guests choose to fly into Atlanta, rent a car and drive approximately 3.5 hours. Another option is to fly to Tallahassee, rent a car, and drive approximately 1.5 hours.
Yes. Please send vaccination history in advance of your arrival. Canine guests spend the night in our guest kennels.
