Enjoy a day on the water with Orvis-Endorsed guide, Capt. Scott Barmby, on your fly fishing trip to Maryland. As a father of two and a grandfather, Captain Scott takes special joy in ensuring an amazing trip for fly fishing anglers of all skill levels; and, as a patient instructor, has a particular interest in working with those looking to improve their skills. He combines education, courtesy, and excitement to make fly fishing fun for all. If you’re looking for an upbeat captain to provide you and your family with a great fly fishing experience on the Chesapeake Bay, look no further!

Accommodations are not included. We are glad to recommend a local resort or hotel.
Experience what the Chesapeake Bay has to offer the fly fisherman—Stripers (Rockfish), American and Hickory Shad, Speckled Trout, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Redfish, and more. To keep you on the best fishing possible, we move where the fish move. Therefore, the location, time of launch, and time of return may change some due to fish migration.
To get us there, we have two fantastic fishing platforms, Pathfinder 2700 open equipped with Garmin and Hummingbird electronics, a 425HP Yamaha outboard and Rhodan trolling motor. Hewes 21 Redfisher equipped with Garmin electronics, a 300HP Yamaha and a Motor Guide trolling motor. Both boats are great fishing machines and will get in skinny water where the fish are.
We’ve got rod holders! Room for eight fly rods plus tons of storage.
Bring your own equipment or use all our latest ORVIS rods.
NOTE: This trip is for 1-3 people.
The Chesapeake Bay is broken down into three sections:
Upper Bay: from the Bay Bridge to the Susquehanna River
Middle Bay: VA/MD line north to the Bay Bridge
Lower Bay: VA/MD line south to the Bay Bridge Tunnel
We predominantly fish in the Middle Bay and upper parts of the Lower Bay.
Spring (mid-March until mid-June):
A little chilly in March, sometimes the weather can be warmer and 50+ degree days are common. April and May temps are 50’s to 70’s. June temps are upper 70’s to 80+. Our Striped Bass Season is closed 4/1-5/15 as of now. We do have good Speckled Trout fishing during the closed season. As the water and air temps increase, the fish are moving into shallower water.
Summer (mid-June until early September):
Temps are 70-90 degrees and sometimes we get late afternoon thunderstorms. The morning and evening temps are the coolest. Mid-day can be good fishing with the right tide and some overcast skies. This is when we see Bluefish; and, from about July, Spanish Mackerel. Redfish are also more common in summer.
Fall (September until late November):
Shorter days and cooler temperatures make this a GREAT time to fish! Temperatures range from the upper 70s in September to the low 50s in November.
Winter (late November until early March.):
As water temperatures begin to drop, the trophy Striped Bass start to move back into the Chesapeake Bay and 40" fish are here. January thru March, the temperatures range from the low 40s to the mid 50s.
No. The boat is licensed which includes all persons fishing on it.
Bring your own seven- to nine-weight rod(s). I recommend two rods—one with a floating line and the other with a 250–350 grain depth charge line. Seven foot, 16-pound leaders will work. We have rods on the boat always.
Sure. We'll have them onboard. We are happy to customize your trip to include both spin and fly-fishing.
Yes, in accordance with regulations in place at the time of your trip. We encourage catch and release to sustain the fishery.
Yes, on the 27' Pathfinder. The 21' Hewes does not have a head, but we can make a stop if needed.
Rain gear is never a bad idea.
Please apply or bring your favorite brand. We don't allow spray sunscreen on the boat (the spray discolors the boat materials).
Feel free to enjoy the beverage of your choice in moderation. We recommend any additional celebrations wait until we are off the water.
Almost always.
We love dogs too, but no.
