Orvis-endorsed lodge nestled alongside the Rio Grande in the heart of Tierra del Fuego.
100% customer satisfaction has been our commitment since 1856. It's who we are. If you aren't happy with a product or service, we want to know about it. And we'll make it right.
THAT'S THE ORVIS WAY.
San Jose Lodge
San Jose Lodge optimizes fishing efficiency across over 12 miles of the Rio Grande by limiting rods and strategically rotating spots to rest fish and target high concentrations. Access is swift via a well-maintained road network, allowing for short drives from the lodge to the river.
Our fishing program operates on a split-day beat rotation, with morning and evening sessions separated by a relaxed mid-day break for lunch and rest. Our guides specialize in the river's narrow, shallow sections, where precise techniques are essential for success.
Our service is very detail oriented and focused on you and your needs. With only 4 rods in the river at a time, we are always concentrated on you and can create a genuine atmosphere conducive of a comfort that your typical commercial lodge cannot offer.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

San Jose Lodge is a beautiful, classically styled Patagonian farmhouse that sits on a 24,000-acre working ranch on the island of Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina. The lodge has an intimate family-style atmosphere with the added touch of warm and welcoming service, delicious chef-prepared cuisine paired with fine Argentine wines, three comfortable and spacious double rooms with private ensuite bathrooms, and two inviting lounge rooms with fireplaces for guests to enjoy. The San Jose experience is like being a guest at a friend’s vacation home or fishing property.
In addition to comfortable rooms and lodge accommodations, we have several other amenities to enhance your angling experience. Adjacent to the guide greeting area behind the main house we have a large, heated gear room with benches for you to store waders, boots, and fishing gear. Centrally located on the river we have a small cabin for anglers to retreat from the weather and relax. When the weather allows, we often roast a lamb over an open fire for lunch at the cabin rather than returning to the lodge for the mid-day break. In classic Argentine ranch tradition, each week, our staff hosts an authentic Asado (Argentine BBQ) in our artfully designed “quincho” located in our remodeled sheep shearing shed.
Our carefully crafted trip itinerary walks you through the standard travel requirements to/from Argentina and provides the day-to-day details on what it's like to spend a week fly fishing on the Rio Grande at San Jose Lodge.
We offer an all-inclusive seven-night and six-day fly fishing package that operates on a fixed week Friday-Friday schedule from early February through early April.
A stay at San Jose Lodge is an unforgettable fishing experience that needs to be lived to be fully appreciated.
With annual returns of 50,000+ fish and an average size exceeding eight pounds, no other river in the world can rival the Rio Grande in Argentina's southern territory of Tierra del Fuego as the best place on the planet to catch sea-run brown trout. Combine the river with the best returns and the largest average size of sea-run brown trout with easy access to twelve miles of rested pools and that’s the San Jose Lodge fishing experience.
Since John Goodall first stocked a few tributaries to the Rio Grande with Salmo trutta eggs in the 1930s, sea trout took root in strong numbers and now boast annual returns that exceed 50,000+ fish. Today the Rio Grande claims the undisputed number one position as the most prolific river to fly fish for sea-run brown trout in the world. Studies have shown that sea-run brown trout can return to the Rio Grande over four times to spawn during their lifecycle and reach a weight that exceeds 20+ pounds. With an average size exceeding eight pounds it’s truly a privilege to fish the Rio Grande for this remarkable strain of sea-run brown trout.
